This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

I have read hundreds of other books on the War To Prevent Southern Independence, and this one ranks among the best and most informative of them all. This book goes a long way in explaining why Lee's Army Of Northern Virginia was the invincible fighting force it became. Consistently emerging as the victors of battles in which they were nearly always outnumbered 2 or 3-to-1 by an army equipped with superior arms and ammunition.Product details

Four Years Under Marse Robert Robert Stiles Books Reviews
Sad, yet accurate details of the Civil War. I knew his elderly daughter, Evelyn, when I was a little girl. Visited their home (where he wrote the book), and stood frozen in time; for a unique glimpse into the past. I very much wanted to learn more about both she and her father; but as the title suggests, the book focuses on war details, rather than more of an insight into his family life and the war's effect upon them. For example, they hid money and jewelry in a brass kettle and buried it, so the Union Army could not take it. I was looking for the man behind the soldier.
Excellent 1st person account in the artillery unit Richmond Howitzers of a soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia. Very good read!!
Stiles provides nice details about Lee and particularly about the fighting in 1864, which has been my interest. Good read.
The writing style of Robert Stiles makes this an easy to read but absorbing story. It contains many facts of Civil War conduct at the ground level not found elsewhere. Ah, that I had read this during History Studies in College. It adds so much!!
This is a very credible "I was there"account of civil war days, as they were lived by men on the ground. You rarely find this where the ring of sincerity echoes from almost every page.
